Banovallum School

Physical Education

We aim to provide an engaging and challenging curriculum that allows students to achieve across three areas: Thinking (know what), Physical (know how) and Personal (know why).

We offer excellent opportunities to develop a healthy life-long love of physical activity and to develop first-class teaching and learning environments where students enjoy working hard together to achieve success. We want all students to feel they belong as part of a team, believe in their healthy potential and become as physically, socially and emotionally well as they can be. We do this by developing the attitudes, skills and knowledge required to be a leader and team player.

Implementation

In Key Stage 3 students participate in a range of different sporting activities twice a week. These activities change every four weeks and then they are assessed. The PE programme incorporates a variety of sports and activities to ensure all students develop the confidence, tolerance and the appreciation of their own and others’ strengths and weaknesses. We provide opportunities for all students to engage in extra-curricular activities and sporting fixtures during and after school. This is an inclusive approach which aims to encourage physical development and well-being.

In Key Stage 4 students also take part in physical activity twice a week, with the blocks of work changing every 4 weeks. They get an element of choice at Key Stage 4 to choose the types of activity they take part in depending on their interests and strengths. More of an emphasis is placed on tactical awareness, coaching, officiating and leadership. There is sometimes an opportunity to use local facilities in Horncastle (gym, swimming, squash), depending on the timetable.

There is the option to study OCR Cambridge National in Sport Science as part of the options process. This is a vocational qualification that includes an engaging, practical and inspiring approach to learning and assessment.  The course provides students with a broad knowledge and understanding of different aspects of sports science including how the body responds to physical exercise and the development of technology in sport and equips students with practical skills such as learning to design and evaluate a training programme. The course comprises 3 units which cover a total of 120 Guided Learning Hours (GLH) and are listed below;

Unit R180: Reducing risk of sports injuries and dealing with common medical conditions.

70 minute written examination taken in Y11. This is worth 40% of the final grade.

Unit R181: Applying the principles of training: fitness and how it affects skill performance.

Final centre assessed NEA (non-examined assessment) units in Y10 and externally moderated by OCR.  This is worth 40% of the final grade.

Unit R183: The body’s response to physical activity and how technology informs this.

Final centre assessed NEA units in Y11 and externally moderated by OCR. This is worth 20% of the final grade.
